Central New Jersey

Central New Jersey: A Great Place To Live

Central New Jersey has developed from a suburb of New York City and Philadelphia into an economic power of its own right.

Central New Jersey is not a clearly defined area, as some people just refer to North and South Jersey. But by most definitions, Central New Jersey includes Union, Somerset, Hunterdon, Middlesex, Monmouth, Mercer, Warren and sometimes includes Ocean and Morris counties. Depending on the counties included, Central New Jersey has a population between 2 and 3 million residents.

Once a ‘bedroom community’ or commuter haven for those who worked in New York, Central New Jersey today has a powerful and diverse economy. Central New Jersey is home to many companies and a major center for pharmaceutical companies including Johnson and Johnson, Merck-Schering, Sanofi-Aventis, Hoffman La Roche, Novartis and Bristol-Myers Squibb) and communication companies (Verizon Wireless, Avaya, AT&T Vonage Communications and Telecorda). Other major employers in Central New Jersey include Merrill Lynch, Rutgers University, and Chubb Insurance.

Living in Central New Jersey has several benefits. For one, New Jersey is one of the best places to make a living with a median income that’s second in the nation statewide! Somerset and Hunterdon county consistently rank in the top 5 nationally for median income, and Middlesex, Monmouth, Mercer, Warren, Ocean and Morris aren’t usually far behind. New Jersey’s home to great schools throughout the state – including Bridgewater’s award-winning high school and Basking Ridge’s top ranked school, Rutgers University in New Brunswick and Princeton University. For these reasons and others, more and more people are deciding to call Central New Jersey home, which is why New Jersey has consistently posted growth both economically and in total population!
